Elegant and romantic

CUISINE FRANÇAISE

In 1969, artistic craftsmen of Disneyland fame created a romantic rendezvous in the cellar of the old California Hotel. This historic site, built in 1922, is known as The Villa del Sol and houses fine gift shops, clothiers and boutiques with a European flair, as well as four different independent restaurants. Located in the heart of downtown Fullerton, this three-story building, with its tile roofs and interior courtyard, is a beautiful specimen of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.

Reminiscent of Old Europe, The Cellar Restaurant, located under Fullerton's Villa del Sol, is accessed via a flight of dimly lit stairs. The Cellar is the perfect setting for an intimate and romantic evening of fine dining. Patrons will find themselves enjoying fine French cuisine while comfortably seated in soft velvet-backed chairs upholstered in rich mellow leather and surrounded by a dimly lit interior, complimented by dark wood. The ambience is further defined by shimmering brass lanterns and fresh-cut flowers, placed upon crisply napped, white linen-covered tables. Chandeliers catch the glimmer of heavy monogrammed crystal, silver and imported German china. Intimate and cozy, the three dining rooms are elegant amid structured arches and cave-like walls, decorated with wine casks and silver lanterns. Thick carpets add to the feeling of comfort and ease. The elegant surroundings include fine oil paintings, antique china cabinets, and a cozy fireplace. No detail has been overlooked.

Culinary excellence abounds with only the finest and freshest foods prepared in a lighter version of classical French cuisine. The Old-World charm of The Cellar is reflected in the exciting menu. There is an impressive selection of hors d'oeuvres including, Norwegian Smoked Salmon served with its traditional garnishes, chilled Tiger Shrimp in a creamy cocktail sauce accented with Lemon and Brandy, and fresh Duck Liver on a black Truffle Terrine served with French Cornichons. First courses also include a variety of singularly good salads, followed by our award winning Lobster Bisque. Dessert temptations include Chocolate Mousse Cake and Crème Brulee. Fresh raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries are seasonal and may be served alone, with ice-cream, or a liqueur such as Grand Marnier. Our World Famous Chocolate Soufflé is more than difficult to resist.

The Cellar, winner of The Wine Spectator Grand Award, was selected in 1992 as one of the top six restaurants in the world for its outstanding wine list which currently features over 1400 selections of European, Californian and other fine wines from around the world. The Cellar boasts a wine list that is a connoisseur's delight. There are wines from a collector's choice of rare French vintages, champagnes from here and abroad, wines from both heralded and little-known boutiques of California. Imported wines come from Austria, Australia, Canada, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal and Spain. A collection of fine Oportos is available for either an aperitif or after-dinner sipping. Each wine is carefully cellared and served with professional attention.
